Robert S. Warshawsky, MD

Robert S. Warshawsky, MD , an ophthalmologist and a partner at Eye Care Associates for more than 25 years, is well known in the community. He does comprehensive ophthalmology, including cataracts, glaucoma, pediatric ophthalmology, corneal transplants, and refractive surgery.

Dr. Warshawsky has been performing corneal surgery since 1975; he is trained and certified in both the LASIK and photo refractive keratectomy (PRK) to correct refractive errors.

A native of Michigan, he graduated cum laude from the College of Liberal Arts at the University of Michigan at Ann Arbor; he received his MD degree from their School of Medicine where he was a member of Alpha Omega Alpha, the medical honor society. Dr. Warshawsky served an internship at the Los Angeles County General Hospital, followed by an ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota School of Medicine.

In 1975, Dr. Warshawsky entered the private practice of ophthalmology in Minneapolis and in 1976 was board certified by the American Academy of Ophthalmology. His medical experience also includes employment as a general practitioner with the large California health maintenance organization Kaiser Permanente as well as service in the U.S. Army.

Dr. Warshawsky was active in establishing the Phillips Eye Institute, originally part of Mount Sinai Hospital and now a specialty eye care hospital in the Allina Health Care System. He also has medical staff appointments to Abbott-Northwestern Hospital, Minneapolis Children’s Medical Center, Fairview-Southdale Hospital, and North Memorial Hospital.

Dr. Warshawsky is a Clinical Instructor at the University of Minnesota and is licensed to practice in Minnesota, Michigan, and California.

He is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, the Minnesota Ophthalmology Society, the Hennepin County Medical Society, and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

Neal A. Sher, MD, F.A.C.S. (www.drsher.com)

"I have been practicing ophthalmology for almost 25 years and still find the field dynamic, exciting, and rewarding. I particularly enjoy working with many wonderful patients over a number of years and getting to know them and their families. "With refractive surgery patients, it's most gratifying to witness the results of removing a visual handicap-an event which literally changes people's lives."

A native of Long Beach, New York, Dr. Sher received his B.A. and M.D. degrees with honors from Boston University at the age of 22.

After his pediatric internship at the University of Minnesota Hospitals, he entered the U.S. Public Health Service in 1972 and became a staff associate at the National Institute of Health. He spent the next three at the NIH in Bethesda, Maryland, performing tumor immunology and immunotherapy research and authoring a number of papers in that field. At that time, he became interested in ocular immunology and then completed his ophthalmology residency at the University of Minnesota followed by corneal and external disease fellowship training at Moorfield's Eye Hospital, the oldest eye hospital in the world, in London, UK. Returning to Minneapolis, he went into private practice.

Dr. Sher is an attending surgeon at the Phillips Eye Institute where he was a founding member in 1984 and has served as Chief of Ophthalmology. Active in teaching other doctors and students, Dr. Sher has been on the adjunct faculty of the University of Minnesota Medical School since 1979 and currently holds the rank of Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology

Since 1988, Dr. Sher has devoted considerable time to studying and working in the field of refractive surgery. He holds several patents on related medical devices. He has authored or co-authored more than 75 scientific papers or book chapters, is a frequent lecturer, and is a reviewer for a number of scientific journals. In 1994, Dr. Sher was the first American to be awarded the prestigious Troutman Award by the International Society for Refractive Surgery for his work on the control of pain using diclofenac after PRK. He is the author of a textbook entitled Surgery for Hyperopia and Presbyopia, published in 1997 by Williams and Wilkins. It was the first book devoted to this topic. A new textbook, Surgery for Hyperopia, was published by Slack Incorporated in November 2003. Dr. Sher authored a monograph on postoperative care after laser corneal surgery (PRK) published by the American Academy of Ophthalmology (AAO) and edited an Atlas of Refractive Surgery for the AAO.

Dr. Sher has been the principal investigator or co-investigator for ophthalmologic clinical trials as well as a consultant for a number of ophthalmic-related companies including the VISX Inc. He has served as a member of the Preferred Practice Patterns Panel of the American Academy of Ophthalmology for Refractive Errors and Refractive Surgery. Additionally, he is on the editorial board of EyeWorld and Clinical Signs in Ophthalmology.

Dr. Sher makes his home in Minneapolis with his wife. They have two adult daughters. He is an avid movie fan and enjoys photography, travel, and gardening.

Marian Rubenfeld, MD, Ph.D.

Dr. Marian Rubenfeld, our specialist in oculoplastic (eyelid and reconstructive) surgery and a fellow in the North American Neuro-Ophthalmology Society, assisted in establishing this new technology at Minneapolis' celebrated Phillips Eye Institute.

A graduate of Barnard College, she earned a Masters and Ph.D. as well as her degree as a medical doctor from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons and the Columbia Graduate School of Arts and Sciences. She served her medical internship at Hackensack Medical Center, followed by a residency in ophthalmology at Cornell Medical Center/New York Hospital/Sloan Kettering Memorial Medical Center. Dr. Rubenfeld then was accepted for a combined fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology and oculoplastics at the University of Minnesota.

Now a medical instructor herself, Dr. Rubenfeld not only serves as Clinical Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota but also teaches the art and science of oculoplastic surgery to medical residents (physician graduate students) at the Minneapolis Veteran's Administration Medical Center. She is subsection chief of neuro-ophthalmology, orbit and oculoplastics for the Minneapolis VA Medical Center.

Dr. Rubenfeld continues her specialty research and recently published a textbook chapter entitled "Neuro-Ophthalmic Considerations in Orbital Disease." She has co-authored this and several other papers with noted University of Minnesota School of Medicine faculty member and ophthalmologist J.D. Wirtschafter, MD Their current collaboration is published in Principles and Practice of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery, edited by Stephen Bosniak and published by W.B. Saunders in Philadelphia.

She is available for consultation in both standard and laser cosmetic eyelid surgery.

Dr. Rubenfeld, a native of The Bronx, New York, has worked her way "west" during her educational studies. A resident of Minnesota since 1986, she and her husband, a neurologist, are parents of a seven-year-old son and a six-year-old daughter.

Daniel T. Durant, MD

Dr. Daniel Durant , n private practice since 1978, is a board certified ophthalmologist and an accomplished corneal surgeon.

Dr. Durant served as a Captain in the U.S. Army Medical Service Corps during the Vietnam War. He was honored and presented with the prestigious US Army Commendation Medal for Meritorious Service. He also is a member of the academic honor society Alpha Kappa Delta.

A graduate of the University of Maryland and the University of Nebraska Medical School, Dr. Durant has done extensive research and has been part of published papers on heart and kidney physiology at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. His residency in ophthalmology also was spent at the University of Nebraska Medical School.

Dr. Durant is very family oriented and has many diverse hobbies. Gardening, tennis, sailing, and skiing are all activities he enjoys with his wife, Mary, daughter, and two sons. Originally from Maryland, Dr. Durant has been a resident of the Twin Cities since 1978. He lives with his family in White Bear Lake.

Dr. Durant practices comprehensive ophthalmology at our Northeast Minneapolis office located in the Silver Lake Plaza Medical Building, 4001 Stinson Boulevard, Suite LL18.

Shobana Murali, MD

Dr. Murali is a board certified Ophthalmologist and a partner at Eye Care Associates. She performs comprehensive ophthalmology including cataract, glaucoma, refractive surgery, medical eye examinations, retina, and pediatric ophthalmology.

A graduate of the ophthalmology residency program at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Murali earned an award for the best resident research as well as an award from the Sight and Hearing Association.

She is a clinical instructor at the University of Minnesota, teaching residents at the V A Medical center in Minneapolis. She is a member of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Dr. Murali is trained and certified in both LASIK and PRK to correct refractive errors.

She lives with her husband, a Physiatrist at the Sister Kenny Institute, and a son and a daughter.

Dr. Murali sees patients at our Northeast Minneapolis location at the Silver Lake Plaza Medical Building. She performs surgeries at the Phillips Eye Institute and at Fairview Southdale Hospital.

Anne W. Towey, MD

Dr. Anne W. Towey, MD, is a comprehensive ophthalmologist with more than 25 years of experience in the Twin Cities. She is a native of St. Louis, Missouri, and a graduate of Valparaiso University in Indiana. Following completion of medical school at the University of Minnesota and internship at Hennepin County Medical Center, she returned to the University of Minnesota for a residency in Ophthalmology. Dr Towey is board certified by the American Board of Ophthalmology since 1982.

When asked about her practice philosophy, Dr Towey says, "I want each patient who comes to me to feel that I understand, respect, and respond to his or her needs. My goal is to provide the best possible visual result for each patient, and I will do whatever it takes to make sure that goal is reached."

Dr. Towey's interests include pediatric eye care, cataract and Oculoplastic surgery, neuro-ophthalmology, diabetic eye diseases, glaucoma, and contact lenses. Dr. Towey has been teaching medical students and residents for years and is an Adjunct Associate Professor of Ophthalmology at the University of Minnesota. In addition, she is a surgical and clinical instructor at the Veterans Medical Center and Hennepin County Medical Center. With Dr. Towey's interest in teaching, it is no surprise that she finds communication with patients of paramount importance. Patients find her friendly style very reassuring. Likewise, her experience in raising her three children has given her a unique rapport with pediatric patients and their parents.

Dr. Towey has been an active participant and a leader in many medical associations, including the Minnesota Medical Association, Minnesota Academy of Ophthalmology, American Academy of Ophthalmology, and Hennepin Medical Society. She is the past president of the Minneapolis Ophthalmology Society and is current president of Minnesota Women Physicians.

Dr. Towey and her husband Ed, an attorney, have three children, the youngest one in high school. They enjoy sailing, boating, and walking their dog Cassidy around the lake in Deephaven, their home for the last 20 years.

Dr. Towey shares how she became interested in the field of Ophthalmology: "I became interested in vision as a child when I got my first pair of glasses. Then in medical school I became fascinated with the ways in which our eyes and vision are interconnected with other senses and perception. The wide variety of ages and opportunities to preserve and restore sight led me to choose ophthalmology as my profession. I have been deeply honored by the trust my patients have shown me over the years. It has been my privilege to work in this fascinating and rewarding field of medicine."

David Warshawsky, O.D.

"I enjoy getting to know my patients and helping them have the best vision possible," says David Warshawsky, OD, owner of For Your Eyes Only Eye Clinic and Optical in the growing suburb of Osseo/Maple Grove, Minnesota.

Looking at today's advances in improving vision, Dr. Warshawsky assists patients with the LASIK vision correction surgery. Not only can Dr. Warshawsky screen patients to help determine if they may be appropriate candidates for LASIK laser surgery, he also can provide the required follow-up exams after surgery--all in a location convenient to the growing areas of Maple Grove, Champlin, Dayton, Elk River, Rogers, Monticello, and other cities northwest toward St. Cloud.

Dr. Warshawsky has provided care for 18 years at For Your Eyes Only Eye Clinic and Optical to neighbors in the northwest suburbs. An optometrist for more than 25 years, Dr. Warshawsky also performs eye exams and fits contact lenses at the Medical Arts Building and Northeast Clinic locations of Eye Care Associates, with which he has been affiliated since 1996.

Dr. Warshawsky earned his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor and his Master of Science from Wayne State University in Detroit. He was an honors student at Pennsylvania College of Optometry, which awarded his OD degree in 1977.

The father of two sons and a daughter, Dr. Warshawsky and his wife enjoy golf, tennis, and snow and water skiing.

Edwin Glur, O.D.

Edwin Glur, O.D. was raised in South Central North Dakota. He attended St. John's University and the University of North Dakota and did his graduate work at Pacific University College of Optometry near Portland, Oregon.

Dr. Glur began practicing optometry as an Army Captain at Fort Jackson, South Carolina. After two years, he returned to his home state of North Dakota and set up his own office where he practiced for the next 22 years. He was the only eye care provider in three counties. He then merged with the MeritCare Health System in Fargo, North Dakota, before joining Eye Care Associates. He has fit thousands of contact lens patients and co-managed hundreds of glaucoma and cataract patients.

Dr. Glur is a past president of the North Dakota Optometric Association and the 11 states North Central States Optometric Region and has served on several committees of the American Optometric Association. He was named "Optometrist of the Year" in North Dakota.

Dr. Glur has three adult children and lives in Minnetonka.
